Inter-Tribal Ceremonial Association Sound Recordings of the 44th Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, 1965 August 12-15.

This collection contains 36 sound tapes of ceremonial dances recorded in the field during the 44th Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, held in Gallup, N.M., August 12-15, 1965. The tapes contain music from Native American peoples from Mexico and the United States, including the Southwest, Plains, Pacific Coast and Southeast. Twenty eight tribes are represented in the collection which has been arranged alphabetically by tribe. Also on the tapes there are descriptions of the types of dances being performed and who is performing. These descriptions and announcements are in English. The singing is in various tribal languages.

The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial was first held in 1921 at Gallup, New Mexico. It is held annually in the middle of August. It was started by a small group of Gallup businessmen, Indian traders, and reservation superintendents. This organizing group is called the Inter-Tribal Indian Cermonial Association.
